Demand or Desire discusses and criticises the increasingly extreme and irrational consumption behaviours present in contemporary consumerist society.
Demand or Desire features sculptures, videos and photographs by the artists Jeremy Hutchison and Wenyao Mao. The exhibition discusses and criticises the increasingly extreme and irrational consumption behaviours present in contemporary consumerist society through two artworks, Hutchison’s Dead White Man and Mao’s Consumption Traps. In an era when global consumerism permeates every aspect of daily life, shopping has arguably evolved beyond necessity, becoming an extension of desire, a tool for identity, and a vessel for emotional fulfilment. Demand or Desire, based on Zygmunt Bauman’s theory of consumer society, aims to guide people to rethink and re-examine the current excessive, wasteful and deceptive consumerist socio-economic system.
Jeremy Hutchison will give an artist’s talk online. More information coming soon.
