Home Truths

The intricate relationship between memory, transition and personal space is explored in this exhibition.

Curator

Irena Heppard is an MA student in Curating: Contemporary Art and Cultural Management at the University of Exeter. With an undergraduate degree in Human Geography, her interest lies in how personal histories, spaces and overlooked geographies shape our understanding and engagement with contemporary art.

Artist

Jennifer Jones is a textiles-based artist and current resident of the Sarabande Foundation, London. A Central Saint Martins First Class Honours graduate (2002), awarded with Bloomberg New Contemporaries and the New Futures Graduate Art Prize, as well as a residency on the Associate Studio Programme with Acme and UAL. Her practice transforms family photographs and archives into imagined domestic textiles that explore memory, nostalgia and secrecy within the home. In addition to her own work, Jones is the founder and producer of Grafters Collective, a network of support for up-and-coming working-class artists who seek to initiate important discussions about the pervasive elitism in the art industry.

Through her immersive fabric and installation-based art, Jennifer Jones encourages viewers to consider the home’s sensory and emotional aspects. Both literally and figuratively, curtains serve as walls and gateways that enclose intimate and transformative moments. The exhibition creates a dialogue between the visible and invisible by highlighting the under-appreciated geographies of daily living. It also provides a reflective space for thinking about how individual histories develop within shared or changing surroundings.

Jennifer Jones will give an artist’s talk on Thursday 5 June at 5pm at the exhibition preview.
